Japan Day 7 - The 3 am earthquake and the interesting lecture

Its early morning. I woke up and clueless why I woke up this early. I felt tremor. Am I dreaming? I felt that tremor for a moment. Not sure how long. I laid awake for several minutes waiting for alarm. Nothing. Then I went back to sleep.

At 7, I searching the news at Google. Nothing. I switch on the TV and saw that they talked about something. So, its really earthquake happened this morning.

I'm not used to earthquake. Malaysia is in the safe zone (almost). There were only a few earthquake happened (that I can remember). :)

Our lecturer for morning session was really interesting guy. For me, he is a 'gadget' guy. He show us a lot of technology that currently available at Japan (and can be implemented everywhere). And for me, his lecture is among the best lecture up till now.

Evening session, we visited a Japanese corporation that implemented IT in their operation. They were not an IT company, but they implement it nicely. I'm not sure whether they developed the program by themselves, but since they keep improving the program, they must have the source code.

We didn't had any chance to look at their operation. We went back after that and still nothing special happened today. I'm not that well when writing this entry. And I think I need to stop. Gomenasai.

Japan Day 6 - A New Suit for Me

I've got a new suit today for tomorrow visit to Kanaju Corporation. I bought it yesterday and I leave it at Jusco to do some modification on the suit. Thats the cheapest suit I could find. If only I brought a suit from Malaysia, it will be nice. :)

So, after class today, I walked alone to Jusco to take the suit. Jusco is not far from the center but walking there really tiring especially with the cold weather and my body still need to adjust with it.

Anyway, nothing interesting happened today so, that why this entry is too short. :)

Japan Day 5 - Akihabara : The Electronics 'Heaven'

Come friends, let's go to Akihabara today (at least virtually).

Akihabara, the place is famous with lots of electronic gadgets and hobby shops. Its will drive someone like me crazy. If you want to find some newly release product (in Japan at least), go to Akihabara. Its located near Tokyo but you still need to take a train to go there. From our place, it takes more than an hour for me to go there. When you exit the train station, among the first that will greet you are the tall buildings and of course, girls. Wearing lots of costume, whether its a company costume or anime costume. Most of them will give you pamphlets but some of them are just waiting for their friends.

The first costume girl that I met is a Dell girl (see her picture in my fotopages). I asked her whether its okay for me to take her picture. She agreed on one condition, I must take her pamphlet. That okay for me. So, there she was, posing for me in the middle of busy street. Lot of shops there at Akihabara. The only thing that is really hard to find is a toilet. Maybe I don't know its true location but the toilet that I used was located inside 100 yen shop.

The price at Akihabara for some items are more cheaper than Malaysia. And the nice thing is that you can bargain for the price (some shops are not allowing it during our 'visit' there). I really like Sony new camera. I'm not sure what the brand name, but its the latest from Sony. At Malaysia, the price is RM1699 while at Akihabara, I can buy it for RM1200++ and that is not the bargain price. Bargain price is cheaper but I'm not going to tell you in this blog. Its a secret between customer and shopkeeper.

We also went to hobby shop (or some people call it as a collector shop or etc - call it whatever you like) and the 'scenery' is fascinating. We saw lots of goodies there. Trains, cars, PSP, PS2, Wii, Gundam. Lots of things. Its lucky because I didn't brought a lot of money there. If not, I will not have any money left for foods. :)

Talk about food, I remembered one thing. Its really hard to find 'halal' food there. Its really hard. So, if you can survived without rice, so, you can eat bread or fish burger. But one thing, don't ask how the cook the food. Never ever. Or if you are really don't want to eat at Akihabara, you need to plan. The nearest 'halal' restaurant is at Tokyo and the nearest Malaysian restaurant is at Shinjuku.

After lunch, my friends and I agreed to meet again at the station in 30 minutes. They went to survey the price of goods while I walked near the station. During the 'tour', I saw some street performance there. I'm not sure what they talked about because its in Nihongo but the songs were nice. They also had CDs in front of them. So, I guess they also sold the CDs.

30 minutes had passed, and my friends wanted to go to Tokyo. I'm too tired to continue, so, I decided to go back while they went to Tokyo. The 'adventure' journey begun. Without a map, I bought a ticket (I remembered the price, but didn't remembered Shin-Sugita name in Hiragana) and I waited. The train came. Before I board that train, I asked a Japanese guy "Kore wa Yokohama desu ka?". Heh, my Nihongo suck but at least he understand. He told me its not. He asked me to follow him because he also want to go to Yokohama. There I was, waiting for my train to come. After 10 - 15 minutes, the train came and the guy remembered me. He called me and asked me to follow him.

Nothing happened in the train. Only more people board it at Tokyo and Yokohama. Maybe people wanted to go back home after long day of activities. The train stopped several times on the track, waited another train to use the track first. The journey home took longer because the train stop at each station. I think almost 2 hours, I in the train from Akihabara to Sangyoshinko station. At least, I survived the trip without looked at a map (I'm kidding, I looked at a map but on the train. A map with all Hiragana on it. And I only guess the station). But what I didn't tell you is that, the train will display its next destination in Romanji (Roman). So, thats why I survived the trip.

I think, the trip really made me more independent. At least I'm not shy anymore to speak Nihongo although the language that I use is broken. So, minna-san, ja ne.

Japan Day 4 : Hakkeijima Happy Island

Hello all. Welcome back to my blog. Its Saturday (first Saturday me in Japan) and no activities has been scheduled by the center for this day. Its up to us what we will do today. Because its Saturday and we not going to miss our meals at the center, we decided to go to places near the center. So, lets go to Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.

Hakkeijima Sea Paradise only 5 minutes walking from Hakkeijima Station (Seaside line). Only 2 stations from this center. If you come from Tokyo, you need to board a train on Keihin-Tohoku line to Shin-Sugita. From Shin-Sugita, go to Seaside Line station and take to Hakkeijima.

We arrived at the island around 10 in the morning. We used the time to take photo on the bridge towards the island. During the walk, we heard music from the gate on the bridge. I think they must want people to recognize Hakkeijima as happy island.

Hakkeijima Sea Paradise like most of the places near the center is a human-made island. Before the land reclamation project started, most of the places near the center is only a part of sea.

After finished taking photo, we went into the island. The first place we went, of course the information center. We have been advised by many that not many Japanese can speak English. We need to say a word first in Japanese before getting their help. We must be lucky or the island management must know the island will be visited by foreigner. The person managing the information counter can speak English.

Unfortunately, all the rides are close for maintainance. They only open Aqua Museum and Dolphin Fantasy. Never mind. We decided to purchase tickets to see the dolphin show.

The show was scheduled at 11 a.m. We know that the Japanese are the most punctual people on Earth. So, we rush to the show. The show is nice especially during the animals 'dancing' show. The 'dancing' show involve white dolphins, sealion and walrus performing their 'dancing' ability to the audience. The show lasted for 20 minutes I think. The closing was the best where lots of dolphins jump in the water. Nice show. At least its worth it.

After that, we tour the museum. Same as Aquaria in Malaysia, they show lots of fish species. The differences are they have polar bear, walrus and penguins. We tour the museum before finally went back to the center for lunch. Oh, I forgot. We also spent some time to buy souvenirs for family and friends back in Malaysia.

2.30 p.m, after lunch, we planned to go to Torihama. Or specifically Yokohama Bay. A place where one of my friend said almost look like Danga Bay. Torihama station is also in a Seaside Line. Two stations after Shin-Sugita. The fees from Shin-Sugita is around 230 Yen.

The bay is not immediately after the station. Has to walk for about 15-20 minutes. The weather that evening was cold because its only just 3 hours before dark.

I didn't brought my camera because the battery was empty. So, have to depend on others camera. I've got the pic but to lazy to upload. Maybe later.

The place claim the merchandise are from factory but the prices are much higher than in Malaysia. I'm not sure about Lego's price because never buy any Lego set before.

We spend sometimes outside to take the pictures. But the weather was colder and colder. So, we decided to go inside. Inside the shopping center, I try to survey a business suits. But the price are to expensive. Most are around 20k to 60k yen around RM600 - RM1800. So, I decided not to buy there.

Because dinner will only be served at 6.30 until 8.30 p.m we had some time left before went home. We had tea at Starbuck. The price is around 300 yen and above. My friends said the price are as same as in Malaysia. I got myself ice coffee (with caramel). After drink, we walked back 'home.

Tomorrow, I will write about the trip to Akihabara. Stay tuned guys.

Japan Day 3 - Nihongo Class 2 & Tea Ceremony

Konbanwa, minna-san! Genki desu ka? Don't worry my faithful readers, I will not continue with Nihongo. 2 reasons why, the first is that I'm can't write Nihongo words. Second is I'm not good in using Nihongo. Good is when you can talk fluently in a language. Better or best if you can think in the language. If you can think in the language that you converse in, you can save time in translating your thought. Most people are thinking in their native language. Take me for an example, I'm a Malaysian, so, mostly I will think in Malaysian language. When I want to say "Apa khabar" (how are you?) in English or Nihongo, first, I need to translate it from Malaysian to English or Nihongo. After that, the brain will send the translated phrase so, we can speak it in the language. Thats why when we converse with people from the countries where native language is not English, sometimes its take time when they want to reply to our queries (also apply to me).

Ok, back to the main story. The third day in Japan, we continue with our Nihongo lesson. Of course, we stay in the groups assigned to us the day before. Lots of conversations were teach by sensei today. We also venture into how to say time and date in Nihongo. I think these conversations are important for us to held simple conversations with Japanese. I also has use it everyday. For example, greeting to the cafeteria workers. Should respect them because they rise early to prepare our meal here at the center. But most of us (participant) agreed that 2 classes are not enough for us. Maybe more than that. At least until we can form our own words. Cannot write Nihongo words can be excuse. The important thing is to read and understand what the Japanase said.

Although today we learn lots of conversation, but sensei use one conversation for group presentation. That is ordering your food from the restaurant. :) We held group photo at the end.

Afternoon session, we joined a tea ceremony and wearing kimono. Really excited about it although I already wear it during my final year at USM. Maybe because now I'm will wear it at Japan. :)

Before we started, our instructor thought us about the importance and manner in the ceremony. I already know a little bit about it, since I've watched it on America's Next Top Model; and on anime. But seeing is not same as doing. During the ceremony, I made mistake when I bow to the hostess. Anyway, from my personal opinion, the 'kuih' is really nice while the tea is bitter. Never drink un-sweetened drink tea before. Anyway, the experience is an eye-opener for me. If Japanese as the developed country can preserve their culture, so, why can't us the developing world? Malaysia is rich with our own culture that is unique in our country. We really adapt each ethnic culture and made it as Malaysian culture.

My battery was really failed on me during kimono wearing session. It choose wrong time to be empty. Arrghh..So, now I need to rely on my friends. Hopefully, I'll get it soon enough.

Before I end this entry, I really want to apologize because I publish this entry 3 days late. Its not because I'm lazy but I can't think the contents of this entry when I'm not in front of computer. Maybe I slowly loose the ability to write (using pen and paper) and think and slowly developing the ability to type and think.

That's all people for today. Ja, matta ne.

"Yesterday we believe that sun and the entire universe center around us. Today, we believe that human is the only intelligence being in this universe. What about tomorrow?

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (error in connection)

Like my previous blog, I will also posted about technical things in here. Some of the things that I do in my work.

So, I currently building two web-based system for my organization. I'm doing in on the new laptop given by the company to me. As most of you (ASP developers especially), Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is not supported in Windows XP although the architecture of the operating system almost same as Windows 2000. You need another SQL Server for that. The only thing that you can use (can be downloaded for free) is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Unlike when they newly released the program, now you can download several tools that can be used with the sql server.

After finished installing the program, the first thing I do, is creating a database that is identical like the production database. Problem is, the GUI provided by Microsoft does not support Import/Export data such in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (its free remember). So, you need to use SQL Server 2000 Manager to connect to the database. I tried to do that but failed. Not sure why. So, the next thing I do, is I copy the whole SQL data and log file for my database into the laptop. Miracle did happpened. And in my case, the database work perfectly.

Happily, I copied the system into the laptop. Then, I tried running the system. Failed. Oh, I forgot to add users in the SQL server. Users created. Running the system again. Failed again. So, you think what really happened? These are the errors that I got in the log file (always remember to log all errors and success connections) :

Error: 18452, Severity: 14, State: 1.
Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection. [CLIENT: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]

If you get errors like that, please do this way :
1. Open SQL Server Management Studio Express
2. Right click at the very top of your SQL tree (it has play icon inside a database icon. The name is yourpcname\yoursqlname) and choose Properties.
3. Go to "Security" page. At "Server authentication" choose "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode". Click OK.
4. Close all the windows associated with SQL Server.
5. Open "SQL Server Configuration Manager".
6. Go to "SQL Server 2005 Network Configuration"->"Protocols for yourSQLname".
7. Disabled "Shared Memory" and enable TCP/IP protocol. You can also enable "Named Pipes" protocol if you like.
8. After that go to "SQL Server 2005 Services" and restart your SQL Server service. Not "SQL Server Browser" or "SQL Server Reporting Services" or "SQL Server FullText Services".
9. After restarting, run you program again. See if its connected to the SQL server. Its supposed to connect. If not, tell me. :)

I think thats the end for our article. Hope its help you. :)

Japan Day 2 - Nihongo Class 1 & A Trip To Kamakura

Kamakura e Ikou! (or lets go to Kamakura) is a phrase I learn today. Yeah, I will bring you to Kamakura (virtually, of course) by posting the pictures in my fotopages. But before that, lets start the today entry in order.

At 9.00 a.m (I woke up at 6.00 a.m) the first Nihongo lesson is started. We are divided into 3 groups. The first group of course my group which has person from Myanmar, Mongolia & Malaysia (noticed that the countries in this group is all started with M). The third group is special I think because from my point of view, they all have learn Japanese before. The second group is the rest of us (Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam).

Because we have 3 groups, each sensei is introduced by themselves. But still the program coordinator is around when you need him. :)

I think all of us in the class do not has a basic in Nihongo so, the class started with basic Nihongo such as numbering (zero, ichi, ni, san, yon, go, roku, nana, hachi, kyu, ju up until man - 10000); basic conversations and the conversations for shopping (if only I learned it yesterday, maybe I can practiced it at 100 Yen shop). The sensei use fun technique during teaching and I think its working. Although, I cant remembering all the things that she taught today, but at least I can greet the cafeteria's workers and receptionist. We do a lot of basic conversations in front of the class. Maybe she dont want us to be shy in doing Japanese conversations. Its work I think because I ask the receptionist my room's key during the evening in Japanese (after returning from the trip).

At 1.00 p.m, we went to visit Kamakura city. Beside us (the participants), our coordinator and one translator also join in the trip (sorry folks, can't reveal their name. I does not has any permission to write their name here). We go to three sites (three = san) which unfortunately I forgot the first 2 sites. The last is daibutsu if I'm not mistaken. The first site is a Buddha temple, the second is a Shinto shrine (anime's fan, do you remember the colourful building that the characters visited during new year? That's Shinto shrine). The third site is a Buddha temple (to look at the Daibutsu - big Buddha's statue).

Along the way, our coordinator (with help from the translator), told us the Kamakura brief history. At the sites, he told us about each site story and its interesting to hear about it. Of course, we also had been given free time to explore, pray, sightseeing, or snap pictures at the site's compound. The most interesting thing that I notice is that, more people were at Shinto shrine (FYI, Buddha and Shinto is the largest religion in Japan. From our coordinator, he said that most Japanese is a Buddha and Shinto including him). I already know it for sometimes but I need a Japanese to tell me the statement that I heard is correct. For me, its an identity unique to Japan and I really respect it. If only people at Malaysia can respect each other religions as Japanese does, we can live a peaceful life (i'm not saying that Malaysia is not peaceful but if you are not ignorant you know what I mean).

Okay, back to the entry, what's else that all of you want to know? I think I can't tell you much. Just that, look at my fotopages, you can enjoy the pictures that I've taken. Oh, in case you are wondering what the thing each of us carry around during the visit, its a radio. So, we can hear the translation and also instructions during the visit. Ja ne. See you in the next post. :)

Day 1 - Beginning of the training

Hello guys, while I'm typing this entry, I'm uploading pictures for your viewing pleasure and at the background the Japanese radio (Tokyo.FM) 'menceriakan suasana'.

As today, I'm formally beginning my training and live in Japan or maybe specifically in Yokohama. I'm learning about Japan, about how to greet people, how to ask something and also to learn about the train system. The later is most important thing that I need to understand as I want to go to Akihabara. Maybe just for windows shopping because I don't have enough cash with me. Remember, I need to survive for 6 weeks in Japan and with the current cost of living here, I'm trying very hard.

I'm not sure whether I can share most training information with you. I think the experience in Japan is allow but the content for the rest of the training will not be allow by my sponsor (I think so). So, guys, if you really want to know about what my training is all about, I think you better wait for me to return to Malaysia. Then, I'll share with you but not all of you, of course.

Rushing to take group photo

The group photo

Okay, back to the topic. In summary, we have our group photo today but sadly, the photo that I uploaded is not containing our instructor and training coordinator (hmm..maybe I should ask him to take picture again with us). There are 24 of us from various Asian countries. I currently trying to remember each one of them but because I've never been to overseas (except Singapore), so, its a little hard for me to pronounce each member's name. But like I said in my previous entries, I'll survive and I know I'll remember them (at least their face and their nickname). I'm optimist, remember (or try to be an optimist). :)

During the introduction session, each one of us need to told our expectation towards the training. I'm not telling mine. I'm telling my company's expectation or at least my boss expectation. I know he expect much from me. Don't worry boss-san, I'll absorb as much knowledge as I can here.

There are some difficulties staying here for now. First, the language barrier. As I've mentioned, I'm learning how to speak Nihongo. I only know several phrases before arrived at Japan such as "Sumimasen", "Arigato", "Ohaiyo", "Gomenasai" and some of the numbers like "ichi", "yon", "roku", "nana" and some food like "Gohan". All the phrase that I learn while watching anime slowly come back to my mind. Need time to retrieve it. Do I tell you that I need to point to some item to ask for its price? No, no, Japan is not that bad. Each item has its own price tag, only at 100 yen shop that certain items doesn't has its own price (without us knowing that each item that doesn't has a price tag is a 100 yen item). But mostly the experience here (for this first day) is really enlightening. We'll see what else in store for me from tomorrow onwards.

After class today, my friend and I walked to Jusco. We didn't know the location exactly, but we walked like we knew which way to go. Heh, at least we found it. We searched for neck-tie because we didn't bring one with us. At first, we looked at Jusco but the price there (for us) is a little expensive. So, we searched for 100 yen shop because from what the receptionist told me, its near Jusco. At last, we found it. I brought 2 necktie for me and 2 items for the-loves-one. I try to search item to give as souvenirs to my friends and colleagues back at Malaysia but since the time is late and we need to go back for dinner, I abandoned the futile search. Next time I guess. So, friends and colleagues, don't expect much from me. I will not give expensive souvenir (unless you want to pay for it) but just something for you (that is really from my 'pure' heart). Oh, BTW, the anime here is expensive so don't ask me to buy some for you. The music CDs also expensive than Malaysia. I'm not sure about electronic items since I'm not visiting Akihabara, yet (noticed the "yet" statement). Heh.

Okay-la guys, enough for today. I'll put another post tomorrow since I'll be visiting some interesting place tomorrow. Until then folks. Chiao!

My 'home' for the coming 6 weeks

Studying the train line

Got a map containing railway lines in Tokyo..very complicated but managed to study about it. So, I know now how to get to interesting places in Yokohama. The downside is that I only have 10,000 yen now. Don't know whether it will be enough or not. But luckily the food here is free from Monday to Saturday. Only on Sunday need to search for our own food. Some of the participant already made plan to go to Tokyo during the weekend. Maybe I'll join them.

The place where I stay is near sea. I can see the seaside from here but don't know how much time for me to walk there. :)

Arriving in Japan

* the time I've mentioned below is local time. For example, while I'm at Malaysia, the time is based on Malaysia time, while at Japan, it based on Japan time which 1 hour earlier than Malaysia.

Hey guys, long time no see. From this moment, this will be my new blog. I'll try to transfer posts from my old blog later.

As some of you know, I now at Yokohama, Japan. I will be here for 45 days excluding today and my departure date for short courses in IT.

I departed from Penang at around 8:20 p.m and arrived at KLIA 55 minutes later. Walked to exchange counter to check-in for flight to Narita International Airport, Japan. Surprise, surprise, I've got an invitation to go Japan Airlines Lounge while waiting for my next flight which departed at 11:05 p.m. I've never boarded any other airlines beside Malaysia Airlines and never a big aircraft. The experience is so different and besides, I've got to used the in-flight entertainment provided by JAL.

Landed on Narita at 6:28 a.m and the registration is faster than I expected. Maybe because JAL staff are efficient enough to give necessary form to us so we can fill it during the flight. In-flight meal is okay but I'm not Japanese. So, I can't tell you about it. For me, breakfast at 5:00 a.m in-flight time is not an experience I want to repeat.

The first thing I noticed when arriving at Japan is the weather. Much colder than us. In fact, I wore 2 pieces of clothing. The long sleeves T-shirt and a sweater and still its cold. Believe it or not, I breathe out smoke. Currently, I'm not switch on the aircond. I open the door. The cold air outside is coming inside my room. With weather like this, I think I will never take bath more than once a day. Ahaks.

After immigration and custom checked at Narita, I went to arrival hall to meet with the representative send by the sponsor. She waiting for us (from Malaysia) and other participants to arrive. During the waiting time, I used the time to explore the airport (and also buying telephone card, RJ-45 cable and the power plug converter). Overall, during my first time in Japan, I managed to spend almost 5000 Yen to buy all that stuff (including prepaid card to call my love one later).

Overall, I think I'm lucky to be here but I miss my wife. The weather is colder, the language is different but I think I will survive. Only 46 days to go before my departure date from Japan. If I can blog about this course, I give you an update almost everyday. Not promise.
