Is Angkasawan program wasteful?

Wherever I go in the cyberspace, whenever I encountered topic about Angkasawan program most people said it is a wasteful program because we spend around US$30 million to send a Malaysian to space. But, is it really a waste of fund?

The space 'program' started when we negotiated to buy 18 Su-30MKM complete with weapon suite, radar, spare parts and establishment of Sukhoi servicing center in Malaysia. Any weapons purchase (a big weapon purchase) must be come with an (or several) offset to the beneficial of the purchaser country. For example, the offset when we buy 18 Mig-29N (people said it is Najib aircraft because of the N while for Russia N designation is for Malaysia because there are already Mig-29M in service at that time - if I'm not mistaken) is the establishment of School of Aeronautical Engineering at USM. Russia agreed to establish the school with the help of expert from Russia. The offset for NGPV project is the establishment of warship dry dock in Malaysia. The offset for buying PT-91M is the establishment of tank industry in Malaysia.

Now, most of the offset is not benefiting the citizen directly but it will make sure Malaysia will has a better defense industry in the future (if manage properly).

Then, the Angkasawan program is the offset from Su-30MKM purchase. So, for the cost of training, cost of living and cost to blast the angkasawan to the space was all bear by Russian government. Not a single cent come from taxpayer money except :-
1. The cost to search for Angkasawan in Malaysia.
2. The cost to send the Angkasawan to Russia.
3. The cost of people who go to Star City Russia (yg konon2nya iring Angkasawan)
4. The cost of our dear PM who go to Kazakhstan to interact with our Angkasawan.
5. The cost of sending our experiment to the space (I think).

Yes, the Angkasawan program cannot be viewed as "Malaysia conquered space technology" and/or etc. It is because we didn't have the technology to send our people to space. We just hitch a ride using Russian technology. But the impact of the program for the common people is huge. Now, most Malaysian know there is a space station orbiting the Earth. Malaysian know that some of the satellite we send to the space, we made it ourselves. If the government are serious to continue pursuing the space program it is better for the government to also send technical team to learn from Russia. Maybe we can learn something (if not all) from them what its take to setup our own launch platform to go to space. If government are really serious about this, the government need to attract Malaysian that work at NASA and other space agency to setup our own space program here in our own soil.

If the government want to continue with the space program, the government need to know that we will need to spend lots of money for it. But it will benefit our country in the long run.

So, do I think the Angkasawan program wasteful? Not at all. Yes, I know there are lots of Malaysian still live in a hardcore poverty but it is not only government respond to help them. We have zakat's money from every states, right? Why don't we use the zakat's money to help all Malaysian? We have billions of ringgit at Baitulmal. And also, we have rich Malaysian to help poor Malaysian. We have lots of billionaire and millionaire in Malaysia, and why the heck only a few of them 'return' back the money to help other 'poor' Malaysian?

IMHO the government need and should continue with the space program. Send technical team to learn from Russia. And be serious about it.

Saya dah tak larat dah Pak Haji

Saya dah tak larat dah Pak Haji. Budak-budak kat sini main mercun macam besok je Raya. Mak bapak diaorang tak kisah ke? Nak pegi marah, nanti saya pulak kena marah macam hari tuh. Hari tu pukul 3 pagi budak-budak bodoh tu main mercun. Geram punya pasal saya pun turun la pegi marah. Pak guard kat kawasan ni tak marah pun budak-budak tu main mercun. Anak-anak orang besar ke main mercun tuh? Kalau anak-anak orang besar, saya harap diaorg mampus la bila main mercun tu nanti. Kalau tak mampus pun, mercun tuh meletup sebelum sempat diaorang lari. Biar tahun nih diaorang raya kat hospital.

Saya dah tak larat dah Pak Haji. Kontraktor kat atas umah nih dah berapa hari Sabtu dah buat kerja. Hari tu saya pegi marah sekali. Diam kejap. Sekarang buat balik. Tak larat dah Pak Haji nak dengar diaorang gerudi. Guard kat sini pun macam tak buat hapa. Management pun hampeh. Tiap-tiap hari pun tak de. Waktu nak kutip duit maintenance ada la pulak. Nak letup umah kat atas nih nanti bocor la lak saya punya siling. Nak marah tuan rumah tak tau sape. Nak bagitau persatuan penduduk kat sini macam la diaorang boleh buat hapa2. Budak-budak main mercun kat bawah nih pun diaorg tak buat apa, ini kan pulak kontraktor yang buat keja.

Sakit sungguh hati saya nih Pak Haji. Kalau ikutkan dah boleh mengamuk dah nih. Tapi nanti mati pulak budak-budak main mercun dengan kontraktor yang tak berhati perut tuh. Menda la lagi saya nak buat Pak Haji. Cuba ler bagi idea.

My contact & tinkering with blog

Apologies to all. I has not contacted most of you for months. I'm still alive if you keep wondering where the heck I've been. If you see at your right hand side, I've put back my e-mail there. I always want to put that e-mail in this blog but I keep forgetting. Sorry for the delay though.

I still using my old number but I'm still not changing my old phone that already been used since 3 years ago. So, sometimes your call can get through but sometimes it can't. And lately I got a lot of call and sms from unknown number. Maybe the vendor or maybe you guys that been trying to reach me.

If you noticed, some of my tutorials are not fit in this blog design. I'm currently tinkering the design in my unpublished and test blog. God willing, if I has time, I will change this design by the end of year.

My story at Japan still not concluded. I'm still writing albeit at much slower pace. Lots of work currently. But anyway, I will still write it and also I has lots of photos still unpublished in this blog (and at my other webs).

Anyway, just contact me. I'm still alive and will respond to your e-mail and message(s).

About campus election

I'm trying so hard to keep myself from writing this piece of post but today is the limit. After reading so many things from the papers, I feel sicken with the current campus election.

To students who participate in the election. Why label yourself as pro-aspiration or pro-mahasiswa or pro-establishment? You suppose to contest because you want to alleviate student's problems to campus authority. And why the heck you allow outsiders to come and help you? And why are you fighting among yourself? Tore down other people posters and keep sending threat making the campus election as sick as national election. You are the generation that will steer Malaysia's future. If it this the way you behave, I really worry about it.

And for those papers that keep reporting about student elections, stop it. You are among the people who keep 'putting wood into the fire'. Campus election is not a national election. Any student who get chosen to represent the student will not get any real power from the authority. They cannot hoard money as some people in power do. And nobody will bribe them.

What I think about this campus election? I think national political parties cannot be allowed inside the campus. Be it from current party who hold the government or opposition parties.

Enuff said. If I write too long, I will 'broken too many heart'.

Sushi again!

Pay a visit to Sushi King yesterday to buy sushi for break fast. As I promised, if I ever visited Sushi King or Jusco again to buy sushi, I will take pictures and post it here. So, here the meal that I ordered for that day.

Ten-don. Its consists of two fried prawn, and 3 type of vegetables (and don't forget the rice)

This is unagi-don. If compare with Jusco, this meal is at second place. Jusco is much more nicer and the unagi also much bigger.
